A tropical rainforest project for home or school.

A shoebox can become a surprisingly rich little learning space. With this Rainforest Habitat project, kids can build a dense jungle scene while discovering how animals, plants and different layers of vegetation all form part of one ecosystem.

It works well as a creative afternoon activity at home, a classroom ecology or biology project, a homeschool lesson, or a hands-on STEM activity about habitats and biodiversity.

Instead of only reading about tropical rainforests, children can physically build one. Cutting, arranging and layering the printed pieces helps make the idea of an ecosystem more visual and concrete.

Once the diorama is finished, it can also be used for storytelling, a school presentation, photography or a simple stop-motion movie. Kids can add extra drawings, handmade plants or other natural details to make the jungle their own.

Clear placement guides make building easier.

Just like the other projects in the shoebox diorama collection, selected Rainforest Habitat pages use a simple visual placement system.

A small shoebox illustration and arrow show where a background or cut-out element is intended to be placed. Kids can quickly understand the next step without having to work through long written instructions.

Look for the shoebox + arrow symbol.

Why are rainforests so full of life?

Tropical rainforests are a great starting point for talking with kids about biodiversity. Many different plants and animals live together within a relatively small area, each depending on the habitat around them.

While building the diorama, children can talk about why rainforest vegetation is so dense, where different animals might live, and how plants provide food, shelter and hiding places.

The completed shoebox can then become part of a classroom presentation, a biology discussion, a storytelling activity or simply a colorful miniature world to keep and enjoy.
