A fun Forest project for home or school.

A shoebox, a printer, scissors and some glue are all you need to start building a little forest world.

The Forest Habitat is designed as a hands-on project that children can enjoy in lots of different ways. Make it at home on a creative afternoon, use it for a school project about forests and ecosystems, or include it in a homeschool lesson about animals and their natural habitats.

Instead of only reading about a forest ecosystem, children get to build one themselves. They can cut out the woodland animals and scenery, arrange the different layers and watch an ordinary cardboard box gradually turn into a colorful three-dimensional habitat.

And the project does not have to stop when the cutting and gluing is finished. Kids can add their own drawings or natural materials, use the forest for storytelling, take pictures of the animals in their new habitat or even turn the shoebox into a miniature set for a simple stop-motion movie.

How It Works

Print. Cut. Create.

The idea is deliberately simple. Print the pages, cut out the different parts and gradually build the habitat inside an empty shoebox.

Cut out the animals, trees and illustrated pieces ready to place inside the shoebox.

Easy Visual Instructions

Kids can see where the pieces belong.

One feature used throughout my shoebox diorama collection is a simple visual placement system.

On selected pages, a small drawing of a shoebox and an arrow show where a background or cut-out piece is intended to go.

That makes the project easier to understand without having to work through long written instructions and lets children focus more on the creative part of building their scene.

It provides a quick visual guide while the habitat is being assembled.

Before You Start

What do you need?

One empty shoebox
A printer
Scissors
Glue and/or tape

The shoebox is not included. Shoebox dimensions naturally vary, so small differences can easily be filled or adjusted with an extra piece of paper, a pencil or a marker.

Create, learn, tell stories and keep playing.

A shoebox habitat can be a simple craft project, but it can also become a starting point for learning and imagination.

Children can talk about which animals live in forests, why trees and plants are important, how animals share their habitat and what makes a forest ecosystem different from a desert, ocean or savannah.
